Love between two hearts is an usual and unavoidable story line in Tamil cinema. Few movies have said it in very different ways. Maryan is also such a honest attempt. Director Bharatbala with lots of his experience ventured into feature films for the first time, with his long time friend A.R.Rahman composing music. After the audio launch, movie had high expectations from the audience. Maryan story begins in Sudan , flashbacks back to the coastal village Neerodi in Tamilnadu and returns back to Sudan. Dhanush with all his characters we have seen in past , has also proved his skill here. His performance in the captivity scenes in 2nd half gets good applause from audience. Parvati is beautiful and daring. Her emotions would remind every guy in the theater about his girl . A.r.Rahman's background score gives life to the story. Cinematography by Marc Konickxx should be appreciated. Besides all these facts , the movie fails to entertain the audience because of its week storyline and draggy screenplay in the second half. The captivity sequences in Sudan makes the audience restless instead of giving a grip. "Nenjey Ezhu" song , sung by A.r.Rahman is also a hit number from the album. But due to vague screenplay, this song goes unnoticed with no-response from the audience. Kadal rasa by Yuvanshakar raja and sonnapareya gets good response . Enga pona rasa and Innum konja neram songs would take few people to their old memories. Locations for the village sequence are pleasant and convincing. Chemistry between Parvati and Dhanush has worked well. Parvati in the second half , waiting for Maryan shows excellent talent to be good actor. The scene when Dhanush is asked by the terrorists to make a call to his officials gets the theatre into uproar. Jegan, Appukutty and Imaan annachi have done justice to their roles. The director on the other hand , could have concentrated more on the story and screenplay. However good the story may be, only screenplay could keep the audience entertained. Despite its minuses, Maryan is a feel-alone love story to be watched.
